Retired navy chief to lead NDRRMC

President Benigno Aquino 3rd has appointed retired Navy Flag-Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Alexander Pama as chairperson of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Defense spokesman Peter Paul Galvez on Sunday disclosed that the appointment of Pama came following the resignation of former NDRRMC chief Undersecretary Eduardo del Rosario last month due to health reasons.

“Last week the President accepted the resignation (of Del Rosario) due to health reasons and has likewise appointed Admiral Alex Pama to replace Usec.Del Rosario,” Galvez said.

Pama will formally assume his new post on Monday following a simple turnover ceremony at the Department of National Defense.

The former Navy chief, according to Galvez, was selected based on his experience with the defense department and with the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

“We view Pama to be very capable with his experience being the chief of our Navy and he was also former chief of staff of then (Defense) Secretary Gilbert Teodoro,” Galvez said. “He was also exposed to various events during the time of Secretary Teodoro,” he added.

Pama retired from the service on December 21, 2012 after he reached the mandatory retirement age of 56.

Prior to his new designation, Pama, following his retirement, was appointed by the President as undersecretary under the Office of the Executive Secretary.

Pama joins the ranks of retired military or police officers appointed by the President to civilian posts, including Del Rosario.
