Chot Reyes was removed as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas and the national basketball team was also disbanded.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Manny V. Pangilinan has given the go-signal to disband the team after approving the creation of committee that will look for its new head coach.
Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner Chito Salud told reporters on Thursday that all PBA team owners have talked with Pangilinan and shared their sentiments on how Gilas Pilipinas fared in the FIBA World Cup and the Asian Games.
“All their sentiments, suggestions and recommendations were all accepted by Mr. Pangilinan and the SBP has approved the selection committee that will appoint a new coach,” said Salud, who did not elaborate why Reyes was removed from his post.
Reyes led the national squad to the Jones Cup title, a second place finish in the FIBA Asia Championship in 2013, and a historic win in FIBA World Cup against Senegal.
But Gilas Pilipinas finished seventh in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, one of the Philippines’ worst performances in the Asiad.
