Lawyer Jessica Lucila “Gigi” Reyes, one of several personalities charged with plunder in connection with the pork barrel scam, needs psychiatric help because she is suffering from mixed anxiety disorder, her doctor said on Tuesday.
Dr. Anthony Lontoc, a cardiologist and Reyes’ attending physician at the Taguig Pateros District Hospital and the Philippine Heart Center, appeared at the Sandiganbayan as the court deliberated on Reyes’ appeal to be transferred to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame in Quezon City.
Lontoc said Reyes cannot cope with a stressful environment because of her mixed anxiety disorder. He, however, told the court that there was no need for Reyes to be placed under hospital arrest.
“She did not have a physical disease of the heart or a neurologic problem. It was more of a psychological disorder. It will be best if the patient will be treated by a psychiatrist to prevent such episodes from happening again,” Lontoc also told the Sandiganbayan Third Division.
Last week, Reyes was transferred from the Sandiganbayan detention cell to Camp Bagong Diwa Detention Cell in Taguig City on Wednesday night but was rushed to the Taguig Pateros District Hospital after suffering panic attacks and seizure.
She was brought to the Philippine Heart Center on Friday because of persistent chest pains.
Reyes was moved to the Intensive Care Unit on Su nday for monitoring and was eventually discharged before midnight on Monday.
Lontoc said Reyes’s mixed anxiety disorder is treatable.
“If psychiatric treatment can be given to her there [in BJMP Taguig], then yes, Your Honors, she can be detained there. There’s no need for a confinement in a tertiary hospital. She can stand trial and arraignment,” he added.
Reyes, the former chief of staff of Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, was supposed to be arraigned for plunder and graft charges on Friday but she was unable to go to the Sandiganbayan because of her sickness.
