Tanduay Rhum banked on a strong second half to win a tight contest against Gamboa Coffee Mix, 113-71, on Tuesday in the 2017 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Rhum Masters unloaded 23 straight points in the third period en route to owning the distinction of most points scored in a quarter with 53, to turn a 34-37 halftime deficit into a commanding 87-49 advantage entering the final period.
Tanduay never looked back to post its third straight win for a joint second place at 3-1.
The trio of Von Tambeling, Lester Alvarez and Paul Varilla was responsible for the Rhum Masters’ breakaway in the game.
Alvarez had 17 points, 11 assists and three rebounds, Varilla poured all of his 15 markers in the third canto while Tambeling scored all of his 13 points in that pivotal stage to secure the win for Tanduay.
“(Von) Tambeling was our spark in the second half. He provided the energy which was lacking during the first half,” said Rhum Masters head coach Lawrence Chongson, who also drew 17 points, eight assists and two boards from Renz Palma.
They led by as high as 44 points, 113-69, with a little over a minute left in the game.
Kenneth Acibar netted 16 markers and seven boards while Mike Parala had 12 points for the Coffee Lovers. Playing-coach Leo Avenido scored 11 points and five markers for Gamboa Coffee Mix, which absorbed its fourth straight loss.
