ROSARIO, Cavite: Mayor Jose Ricafrente Jr. ordered an investigation of a fish kill along the Maalimango River here.
Fishermen were shocked to discover tons of dead fish such as galunggong, tilapia and hasa-hasa floating along the river at sunrise on Thursday.
Ricafrente ordered the Bantay Dagat to clean the river and bury the thousands of dead fish immediately in an area far from the river.
Authorities are still probing the cause of the fish kill, which alarmed residents whose livelihood depends on fishing.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office had taken samples of water from the river as well as the dead fish for laboratory analysis.
Residents claimed that oil spill and other chemicals from factories at the Economic Processing Zone Authority may have caused the fish kill which was the first reported incident in the area.
BFAR said fish kills are caused by different factors including low dissolved oxygen, pollutants, disease and temperature extremes.
Ricafrente said he will conduct a meeting between stakeholders, factories and private companies doing business at EPZA.
