Mapua Institute of Technology and San Beda College debuted with a bang on Monday at the start of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 92 juniors basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Mapua overpowered Jose Rizal University, 86-64, as Romuel Junsay nailed six of his 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting in the field in the fourth quarter.
Bryan Samudio scored 14 points and eight rebounds to hand the Mapua Red Robins their first win.
The Red Robins opened the first quarter on a blistering note and were never threatened as they took a commanding lead from the very beginning until the last quarter. Warren Bonifacio registered 11 points, while Bryan Lacap and Sherwin Concepcion had 10 points apiece.
The defending champion San Beda Red Cubs, on the other hand, routed the Letran Squires, 107-74, to join Mapua in the win column.
Joshua Tagala posted 19 points and seven steals, while Evan Nelle made 17 points along with eight assists and six steals, and Carlo Obienza added 16 points to lead the Red Lions, who defeated the Arellano Braves in the finals to win last year’s title.
Meanwhile, Mapua, San Beda College and Emilio Aguinaldo College gun for second win in a row when they play against their respective foes on Tuesday at the same venue.
The Cardinals gun for a second win when they face the College of Saint Benilde Blazers in the last game at 4 p.m., while the Red Lions battle the Pirates in the 2 p.m. game.
Mapua defeated Jose Rizal University in the opening day, while Saint Benilde lost to San Sebastian on Sunday.
