Robredo appeals for rule of law, respect for human rights in drug war

VICE President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo has appealed for respect for human rights and rule of law on Tuesday, a day after President Rodrigo Duterte stressed that killing of drug suspects during a police operation was not a violation of human rights.

Robredo made the call after she was shown unresponsive to the President’s remarks during his second State of the Nation Address on Monday.

“I share the belief of the President that we should eradicate crime, but we have different approach. I believe that in waging war against drugs and ensuring peace and order, human rights should not be violated,” Robredo said on the sidelines of the Istorya ng Pag-asa photo gallery caravan launch in Novaliches, Quezon City.

“We need rule of law. What is provided under our laws, our Constitution, must be followed, because this will be the best defense of the poor against those who abuse their power,” Robredo, a lawyer like Duterte, added.

Robredo’s office is engaged with various organizations in providing assistance for the rehabilitation of the drug dependents.
