Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo will attend her first Cabinet meeting to be led by President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, July 11.
Georgina Hernandez, the spokesman for Robredo, confirmed the Vice President’s attendance in a statement on Sunday or three days after the Vice President was named the head of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).
“Vice President Leni’s schedule for Monday has been cleared for her to be able to attend the Cabinet meeting,” Hernandez said.
Robredo had an initial meeting with HUDCC officials last Friday night.
“She was given a packet of documents to study and prepare for her first Cabinet meeting,” Hernandez said.
In a news conference also last Friday, Robredo said she is up to the challenge of addressing at least 1.4 million government-housing backlog in the country, as well as the expected additional requirement of 5.5 million houses in the coming years.
“This is also an opportunity for her to be an active partner of the Duterte administration. Since it is her first meeting, her initial aim is to get up to speed with the policy and work priorities of the administration,” Hernandez said.
“She is also looking forward to get to know and work with the other Cabinet members,” she added.
President Duterte earlier said he cannot name her to a Cabinet post because he does not want to hurt the feelings of defeated vice presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Robredo, however, was named the HUDCC chairman, an appointment that was relayed to her by the President himself in a phone call, even addressing her “Ma’am.”
Prior to the phone call, the Vice President had paid a courtesy call to the President, who assured Robredo that she would be an active part of the administration.
