CAMARINES Sur Rep. Leni Robredo won’t be a “flower vase” in presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte’s government if she wins the vice-presidency, his spokesman said Friday.
“We will make sure that she will not be a flower vase,” Peter Laviña said, telling reporters in a televised news conference in Davao City that Robredo would be guaranteed a Cabinet post in the next administration. “She will not be doing much.”
“But the mayor is a very generous person, he can deal with anyone,” he added. “So it can be a post that can be mutually discussed between the two highest positions in the land.”
He noted of the speculative nature of his statement, though, saying that Duterte and Robredo haven’t met yet. “Hopefully, the official canvassing would be over as soon as possible, so the two can easily meet and work together immediately.”
Robredo belongs to the ruling administration Liberal Party (LP). She paired up with former Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II in the elections.
Roxas, Duterte’s old friend-turned-staunch rival, had conceded after partial and unofficial results showed that the Davao City mayor was leading by a margin of around 6 million votes.
It isn’t over yet in the vice-presidential race, however.
As of 8:55 a.m., Friday, Robredo has 13,992,734 votes against the initial frontrunner Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s 13,775,423, with 95.87 percent of the precincts accounted for.
The Marcos camp claimed that the results have been rigged in favor of Robredo, who has denied the charges. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
