Vice President-elect Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo will take over one of the Liberal Party’s (LP) highest posts as President Benigno Aquino 3rd steps down from office on June 30.
Speaking to Malacanang reporters on Friday, Aquino said the LP is expected to change leadership now that the elections have ended.
“And normally it gravitates to the high, the most senior public official we have. So I would not want to admit it, [but]I will be classified [maybe]as an elder of the party,” the President added.
Aquino said Robredo is expected to take on a high-profile role in the party, either chairman or president.
“She is aware that she will take one of the most senior positions and the chairman is the highest position but day-to-day activities are handled by the party president,” he added.
“So, that will be decided by the party as a whole. But, I’m sure she’s aware that she will be geting one of the two most senior positions. And, of course ‘we have to ask her preferences for this. [That] we recognize the value of each individual within the party. We don’t force anybody to do it,” the President said.
Aquino is at present the chairman of the party while outgoing Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya is the LP’s president.
Meanwhile, the President said he expects other members of the party occupying different positions in the government to continue pushing for what his administration has started.
“We still believe that conversion of Philippine politics from one of personality to platform-based will undoubtedly help the country and we’d like to contribute toward that,” he added.
“We’d like to continuewhat has been done in the past six years and even the advocacies that we had before we entered as an administration,” Aquino said.
He will step down as President on June 30, the same day that his successor, President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, will take his oath of office
