Flashy guard Terrence Romeo returned to his usual deadly form leading the Globalport Batang Pier to a high-scoring 120-105 victory over the Blackwater Elite on Sunday in the Philippine Basketball Association Season 41 Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
After being held off to only 10 points in a loss to Ginebra last week, Romeo poured in 26 points plus six rebounds despite committing seven turnovers, while last year rookie of the year Stanley Pringle sizzled with 17 points along with six rebounds and six assists to hand the Globalport Batang Pier a 4-3 win-loss record.
With the win, the Batang Pier also halted a two-game losing skid.
“We really need to win here in Araneta because we lost here twice [against Alaska and Ginebra]. It is a total team effort,” said Globalport coach Pido Jarencio during the post game interview. “We are 50-50 right now in the teams standings but we are going to take one game at a time.”
Forward Doug Kramer added 16 points and 15 rebounds while guard Joseph Yeo posted 14 points and center-forward Rico Maierhofer finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds plus four assists also for the Batang Pier, who dealt the Elite to fourth consecutive defeat.
Anthony Jay Washington contributed eight points and seven rebounds for Globalport.
Blackwater’s win-loss record dropped to 1-6.
Despite making most of their shots in the entire game, the Elite were outscored by the Batang Pier in the whole game except the second quarter (36-27, 28-32, 30-26 and 26-20). Globalport also out rebounded Blackwater (64-49) and registered more assists (27-14) and steals (10-5).
In the second game, Rain or Shine defeated Barangay Ginebra, 94-86, to earn its sixth win in seven games.
The Kings dropped to 4-4.
