SAN MIGUEL, Bulacan: Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd on Tuesday said he won’t cheat in the 2016 elections, being a victim of poll fraud himself.
In a chance interview with Roxas after his consultations with farmers here, the former Interior secretary referred to his experience when asked about a survey showing that four in 10 Filipinos believe that candidates will cheat in the 2016 elections.
“That’s a sad thing [that they view it that way]. Hindi ako mandaraya, hindi ako magnanakaw at hindi ako sinungaling (I wont cheat, I won’t steal and I am not a liar),” he told reporters.
Roxas cited in his 20 years in government service as a congressman, Cabinet secretary for three different agencies and a senator, he has never been linked to corruption or fraud.
“Ako nga nadaya nung nakaraang eleksyon kaya kabahagi ako sa ating mga kababayan na dapat malinis at kapani-paniwala itong [parating na]halalan [I was the one who got cheated in the last elections, that’s why I join our people in their call for clean and credible elections),” he said.
Roxas was referring to his 2010 loss to then-Makati City mayor and now Vice President Jejomar Binay.
After losing to Binay by 700,000 votes despite leading all pre-election surveys, he filed an electoral protest before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET).
The electoral tribunal, however, left the case unresolved.
In the 2010 polls, a splinter group branded as Noy-Bi emerged and was said tp have campaigned for then-Sen. Benigno Aquino 3rd of the LP for President and Binay of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino as Vice President.
The President, whose nickname is Noynoy, is the Noy in Noy-Bi and Binay the Bi.
At the time, Sen. Francis Escudero showed up in a campaign advertisement endorsing the Noy-Bi tandem.
The Roxas and Binay tussle will have a sequel in the 2016 elections where they are both vying for the presidency.
“They can look at my track record of being a public servant. The people know that I am not a cheat,” Roxas said.
