The Liberal Party (LP) on Tuesday confirmed that Interior and Local Governments Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas 2nd remains the ruling party’s bet for the presidential elections in 2016.
“Our presumptive candidate remains to be Mar Roxas,” LP Secretary General Mel Senen Sarmiento said during the Ugnayan sa Batasan media forum.
“May mga kasamahan pa kami sa partidong masasabi nating may kapasidad, pero malayo pa ito [We have other people in the party with the capacity, but the elections are still many months away],” Sarmiento said without elaborating.
The matter was raised when he was asked questions on President Benigno Aquino 3rd’s expression of openness to another term.
“What the President said was clear, he will keep consulting to ensure continuity, to sustain the growth and gains of [his]administration,” Sarmiento said.
“Pero hindi niya sinasabing kailangan na siya [But he did not say it has to be him that should sit again],” he added.
Sarmiento said one option was to field a candidate for 2016 that would ensure continuity.
“Meron. Malalim naman ang bench namin e [We have. Our bench is deep enough],” he replied when asked if they have other candidates.
When asked to give names, Sarmiento said Roxas is their presumptive candidate.
