“The athletes are enjoying their experience here in the Universiade. Marami silang natutunan dito dahil nakakasama nila ang mga malalakas na athletes mula sa iba’t ibang bansa. They got some tips from these world-class athletes,” said Philippine Swimming League President Susan Papa.
“That’s our main goal here – for them to learn and see the difference competing in regional events compared to a world-class event like this. Nate-test din ang character nila dito dahil disiplinado ang mga nakakasama nila at gusto ko na i-share nila ang experience nila dito sa mga kasama nila pagbalik sa Pilipinas,” added Papa.
Host South Korea is starting to pull away in the medal board with 21 golds, 13 silvers and 11 bronzes while Japan and China got 13 golds each. US is in fourth with 12-8-9 followed by Russia (11-16-16), France (8-3-3), Italy (5-6-8), Ukraine (4-9-4), Lithuania (4-1-2) and Great Britain (2-3-3).
The World University Games also known as the Universiade is organized by International University Sports Federation under the motto “Excellence in Mind and Body.” It is a multisporting event for university students aiming to promote education and culture as well as building friendship through sports.
It is the largest sporting event next to the Olympics, better than the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and other regional sporting events.
