Second seed Grandmaster (GM) Anton Demchenko of Russia ruled the 2014 International Chess Challenge Open Section held at the Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City.
Demchenko tallied eight points to grab the top honors in the tournament sanctioned by the International Chess Federation.
Top pick GM Ivan Popov of Russia secured the second place with 7.5 points while Filipino GMs Rogelio Antonio Jr., John Paul Gomez and Julio Catalino Sadorra, and International Master (IM) Haridas Pascua are in a seven-way tie for third with Georgian GMs Levan Pantsulaia and Merab Gagunashvili, and IM Narayanan Sunilduth Lyna of India. They scored 6.5 each.
GM Darwin Laylo was in 10th with six points along with IM Oliver Dimakiling and GM Mikhail Mozharov of Russia.
In the group of 5.5-pointers were GM Avetik Grigoryan of Armenia, IM Emmanuel Garcia, GM Oliver Barbo- sa, GM Richard Bitoon, IM Rolando Nolte, untitled Raymond Salcedo, David Elorta, IM Emmanuel Senador and Merben Roque.
