Fidel Braga, Department of Education-South Cotabato sports coordinator, said on Wednesday that the gold medal haul mainly came from athletics, in which South Cotabato is considered a powerhouse.

Maricel Buer, a Grade 6 pupil from Lake Sebu town and a Palarong Pambansa veteran, gave the province its first gold medal on Tuesday in javelin throw-elementary division.

Buer’s teammate Remy Jane Calvo, who hails from T’boli town, settled for the silver medal in the same event.

Braga said they also got four gold medals in the 1,500-meter (m) run.

These came from Charles Dhavid Buhi (elementary-boys), Charlie Dela Cruz Jr. (secondary-boys), Rachel Paterno (secondary-girls) and, Mary Angeline Arano (elementary-girls).

The official said the team also garnered two silver medals in the same event from Ivan Dignadice (elementary-boys) and Jayboy Ampon (secondary-boys).

Dignadice’s teammate Jaypee Garnica took the bronze medal in the same event.

Braga said the South Cotabato delegation also dominated the archery events with two golds and a silver medal.

He said Jusimine Sabrina Dariagan won a gold medal in the 30-m category while teammate Johanna Marie Faciolan settled for the silver in the same event.

Their counterpart in the boys division, Piolo Florentino, won a gold medal in the same event, he said.

In the events for the special needs athletes, the province swept all winning medals in the standing long jump for the visually impaired.
