With the movie’s teaser gone viral online within
minutes, box office returns are sure to be huge for the Kathryn Bernardo-Daniel Padilla starrer, She’s Dating the Gangster.
Undoubtedly the country’s most popular young tandem today, KathNiel as their onscreen partnership has been dubbed, is set to melt the hearts of moviegoers with what Star Cinema describes as “the season’s biggest romantic film.”
The film is the much awaited big-screen adaptation of author Bianca Bernardino’s best-selling Filipino novel of the same title, which sold over 70,000 copies in paperback and garnered an astounding 600,000-readership or hits on Wattpad.
ABS-CBN’s filmmaking arm is confident that Kathryn and Daniel were perfectly cast for the roles since their love team is equally phenomenal.
The team-up of the two young actors has long captured the hearts of millions of Filipinos through top-rating soaps such as Princess & I (2013) and this year’s Got To Believe. This television success paved the way for the actors’ triumphant crossover to the silver screen primarily as part of the ensemble cast of 2012’s 24/7 in Love, which marked their talent management Star Magic’s 20th anniversary. Their draw was further steeled in support roles for Metro Manila Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) blockbuster Sisterakas in the same year.
Kathryn and Daniel’s impressive film exposure eventually earned them their first solo starrer Must Be . . . Love in 2013, which spawned Pagpag Siyam na Buhay in December’s MMFF. Pagpag in fact further solidified the KathNiel tandem as it currently holds the coveted record of being the highest-grossing horror film ever to participate in the annual movie festival.
With the upcoming release of She’s Dating the Gangster this week, the screen couple, according to their producers, will let their versatility as actors shine with their roles featuring undiscovered facets to their individual artistry.
At the helm of the movie is box office director Cathy Garcia Molina, whose film credits include some of Star Cinema’s most memorable love stories, including Close to You (2006), You Changed My Life (2008), and Four Sisters and a Wedding (2013) among others.
Adapted for the big screen by Carmi Raymundo and Charlene Bernardo, She’s Dating the Gangster is a contemporary Filipino love story for all ages. It revolves around the intertwined lives of a set of star-crossed lovers, Kenji (Daniel) and Athena (Kathryn) with major unfinished business to settle, and an unlikely couple, Kenneth and Kelay (also played by the two), who unexpectedly finds love in their individual quests to set things right for those who are closest to their hearts.
The past and the present are cleverly and creatively interconnected in She’s Dating the Gangster as the movie stays faithful to the storyline that made Bernardino’s novel a huge hit.
“I am very honored that Star Cinema has produced a movie version of my novel, and they really have given justice to the story for the big screen,” the author said in a statement. “She’s Dating the Gangster carries the universal theme that true love surpasses the test of time, while also offering an optimistic view on romance as it provides the audience with hope that they need not look far and wide to find true love—that it could be right in front of them all this time, all along.”
The movie also stars Khalil Ramos, Sofia Andres, Pamu Pamorada, Marco Gumabao, John Uy, Alex Diaz, Igi Boy Flores, and Yana Asistio. Veteran and award-winning actors Richard Gomez and Dawn Zulueta are also portraying very special roles in the film.
As part of Star Cinema’s ongoing 20th anniversary celebration, She’s Dating the Gangster opens in cinemas nationwide on July 16.
