Sabido’s silver first Philippine medal in World Tae kwon do Poomsae

Jean Pierre Sabido won the Philippines’ first medal in the 8th WTF (World Tae kwon do Federation) World Tae kwon do Poomsae Championships in Bali, Indonesia.

Sabido, a member of the gold medal team in 2010 edition held in Uzbekistan, wound up second in the men’s freestyle event to take the silver. Canadian Charlie Chong topped the event while Oleksandr Iemelianenko of Ukraine and Po Kai Chen of Taiwan settled for bronze each.

“Behind every block, kick or punch we do lies thousands of hours of training and hard work, backed with a multitude of prayers and support from our fellow Filipinos,” said Sabido, who also placed sixth in the men’s individual Under 39 category.

Cebuana Mikaela Calamba placed seventh in the women’s individual Under 17 event. Marjan Salashouri of Iran took the gold, Kang So-Hee of South Korea the silver, and Tasana Manso of Thailand and Lin Kan-Yu of Taiwan the bronze.

Calamba also fell short in the mixed-pair Under-17 with partner Raphael Enrico Mella as they landed in fifth position behind gold medalists Pongporn Suvittayarak and Katesara Kiatatchawachai of Thailand, silver winners Koorosh Bakhtiyar and Marjan Salahshouri of Iran, and bronze medalists Juan Jesus Fuentes Zuazua and Daniela Morales of Mexico, and Irsyad Aziz and Muttiara Habiba of Indonesia.

Calamba defends her individual freestyle crown on Saturday. Calamba ruled the event in 2012 held in Tunja, Colombia.
