Sago palms are considered excellent source of starch. Other than food, sago palm has importance toward the environment. According to Marcelo Quevedo of the Visayas State University (VSU), the spongy core of the bole can be sourced out for animal feed, garden compost, and fertilizer.

Furthermore, the sago palm can also be used to make roofing and walling materials for building huts. Its leaves, which are more durable than nipa leaves, are made into thatches and can last for more than five years. On the other hand, the hard fiber bark is good for constructing walls and floors.
