Reigning Asian Games champion Rey Saludar shocked his veteran Cuban foe to advance to the semifinals of the 4th Kazakhstan President’s Cup being held at the Baluak Sholan Palace of Culture and Sports in Kazakhstan.

The 26-year-old Saludar posted a split decision win over American Continental champion Jorge Luis Cordero Parlay. The score was 28-27, 28-27, 27-28 in favor of the Filipino pug.

“He is a very strong puncher but I think I hurt him more. In the second round, he hit me with a punch in the head that dizzied me a bit but I was able to counter right away and his head snapped back. I think that got him thinking a bit,” Saludar said.

Saludar arranged a semifinal duel with Ilyas Suleimenov of Kazakhstan.

Earlier, Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Charly Suarez reached the semifinals by toppling Jumsakbaev Jumsakbaev of Kazakhstan and Ammar of Iraq. He will face Mongolian Otdondalai in the Final Four.

National coaches Nolito Velasco and Elmer Pamisa are calling the shots for the squad while Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines Executive Director Ed Picson is the team manager.

The tournament serves as the national team’s preparation for the 2014 Asian Games scheduled on September 19 to October 4 in Incheon, South Korea.
