2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar scored a convincing win over Hayashida Syota of Japan on Monday in the opening of the 27th Asian Men’s Championship in Amman, Jordan.

Saludar, 24, a Polomolok South Cotabato native and a member of the Philippine Army posted 30-27, 28-29 and 30-27 to dominate the first two rounds with crisp punches. The Japanese, however, took the last round.

“He [Saludar] deserves the win,” said Alliance of Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson. “Rey is very determined and I’m hoping his fellow boxers will do the same thing.”

In the other match, Joel Bacho lost to 21 year-old Hiroki Inoue of Japan via unanimous decision.

The other members of the lean PH team are recent China Open silver medalist Junel Cantancio (lightweight), alternate light flyweight Rogen Ladon and Kuala Lumpur City tourney gold medalist Mario Fernandez (bantamweight).

The squad is under the tutelage of coaches Pat Gaspi, Ronald Chavez and Roel Velasco.
