San Beda, Arellano begin NCAA finals series

TOP seed San Beda College Red Lions start their quest for five-straight championship when they battle Arellano University Chiefs today in Game 1 of the best-of-three titular series of the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association senior’s basketball tournament at The Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Red Lions, who are in their 9th straight Finals appearances, are slightly favored in their 4 p.m. encounter mainly due to their vast championship experience that made them the most winningest team in the oldest collegiate league with already 18 titles in their fold.

In contrast, coach Jerry Codiñera’s Chiefs are just in their first Finals stint since joining the league five years ago. They made it to the Finals via a 72-65 win over Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in the semifinal round on Wednesday.

San Beda ended University of Perpetual Help Altas’ hope with an 81-75 triumph in the other semis match. If they win the crown then they will join San Sebastian College Stags in the elite five-peat club.

Coach Boyet Fernandez’ squad enjoy a 2-1 edge over the Chiefs in the season. They won their first meeting, 90-81, on July 12 but the Chiefs bounced back by taking their second encounter, 78-76 on Oct. 4. The Red Lions went on to crash the Chiefs, 97-69, in the playoff for the top position on Oct. 10.
