FOUR-peat champion San Beda College Red Lions displayed solid offense in the second quarter to crush Lyceum of the Philippines, 84-68, on Wednesday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
Anthony Semerad finished with 20 points while Baser Amer and Kyle Pascual 12 and 10 points respectively, to lead the Red Lions in bagging its third straight win. The Lions have now secured solo lead.
With San Beda’s victory, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas and the Arellano University Chiefs are now sharing the second spot with 2-0 card apiece.
“We knew its going to be tough playing Lyceum but we’re up to the challenge,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez.
Nigerian Ola Adeogun, troubled by fouls had a mere 21 minutes of playing time but still contributed nine points and 12 rebounds before exiting with still over two minutes to go.
“We knew we’re coming into this game a player short so us from the bench would have to step up,” said Semerad.
San Beda also got the best out of its second stringers as Ranbill Tongco, Jaypee Mendoza and Semerad’s twin brother David, combined for 23 points, most of which coming in a pivotal stretch in the fourth quarter.
“Got to give credit to my bench, they held their fort when Lyceum was making a big charge in the fourth quarter,” said Fernandez.
Dexter Zamora’s finished with 14 points for the Pirates while Shane Ko added 13, Guy Essono Mbida 12 and Jebb Bulawan 10 as the team’s win-loss card fell to 1-2.
