DEFENDING champion San Beda College Red Lions aim to solidify their hold of the top spot when they face San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags while University of Perpetual Help Altas try to bounce back today in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The four-peat seeking Red Lions regained the solo leadership following a 78-76 edge over the Altas last Thursday to secure their 12th win against only two losses.
A lose to the Stags won’t matter much for coach Boyet Fernandez team as they are already assured of a Final Four slot.
But Fernandez wants his wards to clinch a twice-to-beat incentive in the next round, which he said is a big advantage in their quest of retaining the crown.
The Stags are currently occupying solo fourth with 8-5 win-loss slate and a win over the Red Lions would keep their hope of the twice-to-beat advantage alive along with closest pursuers Letran Knights (11-3) and Perpetual Altas (11-4).
The Red Lions and the Stags will collide at 6 p.m. while the Altas face Lyceum Pirates at 4 p.m. The two secondary matches pit the Perpetual Altalettes against the Lyceum Junior Pirates at 12 noon and reigning titlist Red Cubs against the San Sebastian Staglets at 2 p.m.
