San Beda eyes fifth win in NCAA

FOUR-peat champion San Beda College stakes its unblemished record when it faces Emilio Aguinaldo College while College of St. Benilde tries to surge into the win column as its collide with Letran College on Monday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena.

The Red Lions are considered heavy favorites against the Generals in their 2 p.m. encounter. The Generals are currently holding a 1-2 win-loss slate for solo sixth spot behind San Beda (4-0), University of Perpetual Help Altas (3-0), San Sebastian College Stags (3-1) and Arellano University Chiefs (3-1), Lyceum Pirates (3-2) and Jose Rizal

University Heavy Bombers (2-3).

In the other match, the St. Benilde Blazers are aiming for their first win when they take on Letran Knights at 4 p.m. Letran, which is bearing a 1-3 card, is expected to play without head coach Caloy Garcia and co-captain Mark Cruz, who are serving one-game suspension.

But an upset win by the Generals over the Red Lions is not discounted considering they have beaten the St. Benilde Blazers (81-72), their lone win so far in the first round of the elimination on July 2.

That’s why coach Boyet Fernandez warned his wards of complacency, saying each team is all out to stop the Red Lions winning streak.

Meanwhile, Lyceum’s Joseph Gabayni was named Accel Quantum Plus/316 Player of the Week by the NCAA Press Corps.
