San Beda eyes sixth victory


San Beda College stakes its hold of solo leadership when its battles College of St. Benilde Blazers while San Sebastian College faces cellar dweller Mapua Institute of

Technology today in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament elimination round at the San Juan Arena.

San Beda Red Lions, the only unbeaten team with 5-0 slate, collide with the Blazers at 2 p.m. The Stags will then face winless Mapua Cardinals at 4 p.m. The secondary matches pit defending titlist San Beda Red Cubs against the CSB Greenies at 12 noon and the San Sebastian Staglets against the Mapua Red Robins at 6 p.m.

A win by the Red Lions will solidify their hold of the top spot but a setback will drop them into a tie with surprise second front running Arellano University Chiefs, which stunned favorite University of Perpetual Help Altas, 97-85, for their fifth win in six matches last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Arellano University’s Jiovani Jalalon was named Accel Quantum/3XVI NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week after helping the Chiefs to claim solo second spot.

He is now averaging 12.67 points a game, a league-best 6.67 assists, 5.83 rebounds and another league-high 3.50 steals in six games.
