San Beda faces Lyceum, stakes share of top spot

FOUR-peat champion San Beda College Red Lions will stake their share of the top spot when they face the Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates while Intramuros-based Letran Knights and Mapua Cardinals will battle today in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The San Juan Arena in San Juan City.

The Red Lions, bearing a 2-0 card, face the Pirates at 2 p.m. while last year’s runner-up Knights and the Cardinals collide at 4 p.m. The secondary matches pit defending champions San Beda Red Cubs against Lyceum Junior Pirates at 12 p.m. and the Letran Squires against Mapua Red Robins at 6 p.m.

Coach Boyet Fernandez’ Red Lions are highly favored to overcome the challenge of the Pirates. They started their quest to win five straight championships with a victory over host Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers, 57-49, followed by an 89-55 win over Mapua on July 4.

But Fernandez said they couldn’t take the Pirates lightly, citing Lyceum’s 74-70 win over Letran also on July 4, which he said showed that they are a dangerous opponents.

Both the Letran Knights and the Mapua Cardinals are sharing the bottom of the standings with similar 0-2 win-loss records. The winner of today’s match will enter the win column and share the fourth spot with Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers.
