Defending champion San Beda College Red Lions and the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights will try to notch their 11th win when they battle separate rivals today in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 91 men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The San Beda vs Altas clash begins at 4 p.m.
The Red Lions under coach Jamike Jarin will bank on the prowess of pro-bound Arthur Dela Cruz, returning Baser Amer, 6’8 Nigerian Ola Adeogun, Pierre Tankoua and Roldan Sara to improve their 10-2 win-loss record.
But blocking their way are the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas of veteran coach Aric Del Rosario who are keen on posting back-to-back wins.
They scored a lopsided 70-42 win over the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates last week to clinch the fourth spot with an 8-4 win-loss record.
Perpetual is expecting much from the returning 6’7 Nigerian Bright Akhuetie who recently suffered a minor shoulder injury. Point guard Earl Scottie Thompson is keen on posting his sixth triple-double performance for the Altas.
Thompson, who was Ginebra’s fifth overall pick in the recent Philippine Basketball Association draft will be against San Beda’s Dela Cruz who notched a triple-double performance (26 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists) in his last game.
In the first game at 2 p.m., the Letran Knights who are also bearing a 10-2 win-loss record like the Red Lions will take on the College of Saint Benilde Blazers.
Letran is expected to lean on diminutive playmaker Mark Cruz and forward Kevin Racal. Cruz scored 26 points and Racal had 19 points in their team’s lopsided 74-57 win against Lyceum last week.
The Blazers are aiming to improve their 3-9 win-loss record.
