FOUR-peat champion San Beda College Red Lions and equally tough University of Perpetual Help Altas test each other’s mettle when they collide on Wednesday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) seniors basketball tournament elimination round at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
The Red Lions, bearing a 6-1 slate tangle against the Altas at 2 p.m. while Lyceum of the Philippine Pirates meet the San Sebastian College Stags at 4 p.m.
The twin secondary matches pit reigning titlist San Beda Red Cubs against the Perpetual Help Altalettes at 12 noon and the Lyceum Junior Pirates against San Sebastian Staglets at 6 p.m.
A win by the Red Lions will enable them to keep the solo leadership but a setback would pave way for idle Arellano Chiefs to gain share of the top spot with similar 6-2 card and will also move the Altas just half a game away from the co-leaders.
Coach Boyet Fernandez expressed confidence his wards can overcome the challenge of the Altas, saying they are in high spirit following their 75-56 rout over San Sebastian College Stags last Friday.
Fernandez said their victory over the Stags was just enough to recover from a 76-83 setback to College of St. Benilde Blazers last July 28, their lone loss so far in the first round of the elimination.
Coach Aric del Rosario of Perpetual Help, however, is holding a 4-2 card for solo third spot. Their twin setbacks were at the hands of the Arellano Chiefs, 85-97, last July 26 and the second was to the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 61-62, on July 23.
