San Beda survives La Salle in FilOil opener

National Collegiate Athletic Association champions San Beda College Red Lions outlasted the De La Salle University Green Archers in overtime, 86-80, to book an opening day win in the 2015 FilOil Flying V pre-season collegiate tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

The stifling defense of the Red Lions caused problems for the Green Archers as the former led the latter, 62-54, after three quarters of play.

In the final seconds of regulation, however, La Salle’s offense ignited as Jeron Teng completed a three-point play to tie the teams at 76-all and send the game into overtime.

San Beda managed to extinguish the fiery late game outburst of their rivals and slip away with the win after a stellar 26 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists performance by veteran guard Baser Amer.

Meanwhile, the University of the East Red Warriors also opened their pre-season conquest with a 60-59 win over the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers.
