ROOKIE Ian Sangalang of San Mig Coffee took the Accel-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Press Corps Player of the Week plum for the period of March 10 to 16.
The 6’6 forward Sangalang played a key role in the Coffee Mixers’ 2-0 start in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. He finished with 16 points on seven-of-nine field goal shooting and five rebounds in their 91-75 win over Global–port on Wednesday.
Sangalang, a former National Collegiate Athletic Association Most Valuable Player and second overall pick in the annual draft last year, finished with 10 points and seven rebounds in their second victory (90-80) over Ginebra on Sunday.
“Ian Sangalang gave us a huge lift and got us that lead in the fourth quarter,” coach Tim Cone recalled after the team’s first meeting with Ginebra since their tightly fought seven-game Philippine Cup semifinals battle recently.
“He just doesn’t blink in the fourth quarter. When the pressure is on, it doesn’t matter who is guarding him whether it’s Japeth or the import. He just doesn’t back down, he’s not afraid,” added Cone, a 16-time champion San Mig coach.
With an averaged of 13.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in the first two games of the conference, Sangalang is poised to push the Mixers in becoming a solid title contender in the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup.
