SAN Mig Coffee will attempt to bag its 11th crown today when it battles Rain or Shine in Game 6 of the best-of-seven titular series of the 39th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
After failing to end the series on Sunday, the Coffee Mixers claim they have still the psychological edge when they plunge into their 8 p.m. match against the Elasto Painters.
However, Elasto Painters coach Yeng Guiao said his wards are highly motivated for an all-out battle following their 81-74 victory in Game 5 that narrowed down the series to 2-3. Guiao said they would exert all effort to force a winner-take-all match.
“They may have the advantage, but we will take a lot of encouragement and hope to send the series into full distance. Even if we’re behind, it’s not over yet. We have to believe in ourselves and stay positive,” said Guiao, who like Tommy Manotoc has six titles but is behind Baby Dalupan (15), Tim Cone (15), Norman Black (10), Chot Reyes (9) and Jong Uichico (8).
The Elasto Painters won the opening game of the series, 80-83, but lost in the second, 80-70 as well as the third 77-76. Then San Mig stretched the gap 3-1 through a 93-90 triumph in Game 4 on Friday.
“Next game kukunin namin ‘yan, kahit gaano kahirap [we’ll get the win, no matter how hard it takes]. Binigay namin lahat noong Game 5, pero mas gutom sila so babawiin namin [We gave it our all but they were the hungrier team. So we’ll bounce back] next game,” said San Mig’s Marc Pingres.
