PHILIPPINE Cup champion San Mig Coffee tries to remain unbeaten when it takes on slumping Barako Bull today in the lone 8 p.m. game of the 39th Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup elimination round at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Coffee Mixers, who managed to keep their energy going strong despite a grueling campaign in the all-Filipino Cup finals last month, are the only other unbeaten team in the conference with a 3-0 slate.
Talk ‘N Text is the other undefeated squad with a clean 6-0 card to clinch the first quarterfinals berth through their 94-87 win over Ginebra on Sunday.
James Yap, Peter June Simon, Mark Barroca, Marc Pingris and Joe Devance are again expected to provide support to import James Mays, who averaged 20.67 points on top of 16.67 rebounds, 1.33 assists, 1.33 steals and 1.33 blockshots a game in three matches with the Coffee Mixers.
The 28-year-old and 6’8 Mays will surely have his hands full against prolific 6’8 import Joshua Dollard of Barako Bull.
Dollard, a former University of Southern California standout is currently the highest scoring import with 36 points per game. He also posted an averaged of 15 rebounds and 1.40 assists per clip.
But with just a 1-4 win-loss card for his team, Dollard is feeling the pressure to win all the remaining four games for them to reach the quarterfinals. Besides San Mig Coffee, coach Bong Ramos’ Energy Cola will have to go through Alaska, Meralco and Globalport in the short elimination round.
