THE arraignment of Elenita Binay, wife of Vice President Jejomar Binay, for graft did not push through on Thursday as she expressed her intention to appeal the Sandiganbayan’s earlier resolution setting the reading of the charges against her.
The anti-graft court’s Third Division reset the arraignment to January 29 next year.
Mrs. Binay was supposed to be arraigned on graft and malversation charges in connection with the alleged anomalous purchase of medical equipment and supplies amounting to about P45 million when she was mayor of Makati Mayor.
Six of her co-accused were likewise scheduled to be arraigned – Ernesto Aspillaga, Dulce Cruz, Luz Garcia, Conrado Pamintuan and Jaime De Los Reyes.
All of them, including Dr. Binay, are out on bail.
De Los Reyes, Pamintuan, Cruz and Aspillaga also sought the deferment of their arraignment.
When she posted bail on October 28, 2014, Mrs. Binay said the revival of the charges against here was “part of politics.”
