• Santiago in hospital, but not in intensive care

FORMER Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago is back in the hospital for lung cancer treatment, but she is not in the intensive care unit (ICU) contrary to earlier news reports.

In a Facebook post, Mechel Santiago, daughter-in-law of Defensor-Santiago, said the former lawmaker was in a private room at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

“She is currently being treated for her cancer and the family is hoping that she will fully recover,” she said.
Mechel thanked the public for respecting the privacy of their family and for continuously praying for the ex-senator.

This was the second time Santiago was hospitalized after the May 2016 national and local elections, in which she ran for president.

On May 30, the former senator was confined at Makati Medical Center for pneumonia due to complications of her stage-four lung cancer, which she has been battling since July 2014.

She stayed at the ICU of Makati Medical Center for two days and was transferred to a private room for her to
fully recover. Santiago was discharged on June 7

According to a source, Santiago has been confined at St. Luke’s in Taguig since September 3.

Despite her serious medical condition, the feisty lawmaker managed to join the May 2016 presidential race with former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as running mate.

She also published two best-selling compilations of jokes, quotes and anecdotes titled “Stupid is Forever” and “Stupid is Forevermore.”

Mechel Santiago, in her Facebook post which was also posted on the senator’s official Facebook page, said Santiago would continuously fight cancer.

“She loves all of you. She is a fighter and will continuously fight this battle!” she added.
