• Sarah Duterte’s mom-in-law to retire from CA


    The mother-in-law of Sarah Duterte, daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte,

    is set to retire from the Court of Appeals (CA) as one of its 69 justices.

    The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has declared open applications for the position to be vacated by CA Associate Justice Agnes Reyes-Carpio.

    Carpio is the mother of Sarah’s husband Misael Carpio.

    She also is the wife of lawyer Lucas Carpio, sister of Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales.

    The CA magistrate is expected to retire on December 1, 2016 upon reaching 70, compulsory retirement age for all justices and judges.

    The JBC has also opened two positions for Sandiganbayan justices in view of the optional retirement of Sandiganbayan Justice Napoleon Inoturan, who is set to retire effective August 1, 2016.

    It has also opened the position to be vacated by Sandiganbayan Justice Jose Hernandez, who is set to retire on November 22, 2016 when he reaches the age of 70.

    The council has also opened the position of Legal Education Board Regular Member representing the Law Students Sector, which was vacated on January 13, 2015.

    In addition, the JBC has opened 48 positions for the Family Courts in the Regional Trial Courts nationwide.

    These positions are in the National Capital Region (Metro Manila) in the salas of Caloocan, Makati, Las Pinas, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Manila, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Paranaque, Pasay, Taguig, Valenzuela, Pasig, Quezon City and San Juan; and the RTCs in Regions 3 in Central Luzon and Region 4 in Southern Tagalog and Mimaropa.

    Applications for the positions should be submitted to the Supreme Court, JBC office in Padre Faura, Manila, not later than August 23, 2016.

    The seven-man council, which is constitutionally mandated to screen and vet nominees to the President for vacant posts in the judiciary and the Offices of the Ombudsman and Deputy Ombudsman, is headed by Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, with ex-officio members from the Senate and the House of Representatives and Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre.

    Retired SC Justice Angelina Sandoval-Gutierrez is the head of the Executive Committee and represents the Retired SC Justice Sector.

    Lawyer Jose Mejia representing the Academe, retired Court of Appeals Justice Aurora Santiago-Lagman representing the private sector and lawyer Milagros Fernan-Cayosa from the Integrated Bar of the Philippines are the other regular members of the JBC.
