• Sayyaf man wanted in Sulu killings falls

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Security forces captured an Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandit implicated in a series of killings and kidnap-for-ransom activities Sulu, officials said on Tuesday.

Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, commander of Joint Task Group Sulu, said Junni Jumala, a known ASG member, was collared by joint elements of the military and the police in the vicinity of Barangay Umangay, Patikul Town.

Police also seized a .38-caliber revolver and ammunition from Jumala, who is a suspect in the ambush of Patikul Vice Mayor Jun Tarsum in December 2015.

Jumala, who is facing a string of criminal cases, was also implicated in the killings of soldiers and civilians in the towns of Patikul and Jolo, and is one of those being hunted in connection with kidnappings for ransom in Sulu.

Military officers said Jumala was arrested following information provided by concerned citizens in the area.

Patikul Mayor Kabir Hayudini did not give a statement on Jumala’s capture and security officials provided no other details on the bandit.

Jumala’s group is still holding several foreign and Filipino hostages in the hinterlands of Sulu where military operations are ongoing to rescue the captives, which include two Canadians and a Norwegian who were kidnapped last year in Davao del Norte.
