The country’s best 3-on-3 pairs will test their mettle in the National Championship of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Pambansang Tatluhan on June 9 at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City.
“This is a great opportunity to scout potential talents since we target the provinces in this tournament,” said SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios on Tuesday at the weekly Philippine Sportswriters Association forum at Shakey’s Malate.
From the 584 teams that joined the regional eliminations, 32 teams have qualified for both boys and girls’ under-16 division. The 16 teams of each division are divided into four groups.
Barrios said that the participants would have the opportunity to play and meet Gilas Pilipinas player Andrey Blatche.
“He [Blatche] talked to me and he said he wants to have an immersion with the Filipino youth,” said Barrios.
He added that the Philippines was commended by the International Basketball Federation [FIBA] for actively participating in various 3-on-3 events.
“The FIBA wants the Philippines to take on a role in the 3-on-3,” added Barrios who confirmed that the country will host the 2018 3×3 World Championships. “It’s a very prestigious hosting. Sixteen countries both men and women will be coming here. We are looking forward to that.”
