Tab Baldwin, former head coach of the New Zealand national team is the new mentor of Gilas Pilipinas according to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Executive Director Sonny Barrios.

Barrios said that the 56-year-old Baldwin would coach the team for four years based on the signed contract effective 2015 to 2019. He replaced former Gilas coach Chot Reyes.

Under Reyes, Gilas achieved a runner-up finish in the 2013 FIBA Asia meet and bagged a slot in the FIBA World Cup in September in Spain. But Reyes resigned after Gilas’ dismal performance in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea in October.

Gilas Pilipinas won only against Senegal in the FIBA World Cup after losing its first five games. It finished seventh, which is its worst finish in the Asian Games.

Baldwin served as consultant for two years under Reyes when the latter was still Gilas’ head coach. He is currently a consultant to Talk ‘N Text team in the Philippine Basketball Association

Besides the New Zealand team, Baldwin also once served as national coach of the Jordan and Lebanon national teams.
