The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has named a pair of Philippine Basketball Association players and some top college basketball stars to the national team that will see action in the 2016 Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Stankovic Cup.
PBA rookies Troy Rosario of Talk ’N Text and Almond Vosotros of Blackwater will be leading the squad in the tournament scheduled on May 22 to 28 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Joining them are Mac Belo, Russel Escoto, Ken Holmqvist, Raymar Jose, Roger Pogoy and Mike Tolomia of reigning University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion Far Eastern University along with Kevin Ferrer of University of Santo Tomas, Von Pessumal of Ateneo de Manila University, Jiovani Jalalon of Arellano University and Jonas Raphael Tibayan of Chiang Kai Shek College.
Rosario, Belo, Vosotros, Jalalon and Ferrer were members of the national team that won gold in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore while Tolomia was part of the three-on-three team in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore along with Bobby Ray Parks Jr. and Jeron Teng.
Tibayan, for his part, was a member of the SEABA Under-18 Championship team.
Veteran mentor Nash Racela will call the shots while Michael Oliver and Josh Reyes will serve as his assistants.
The Filipino cagers open their bid against the Malaysians on May 22 followed by games against Singapore on May 24, Indonesia on May 25 and Thailand on May 26.
The tournament serves as qualifying event for the FIBA Asia Challenge Cup slated in September in Iran.
The top two teams will represent the region in the FIBA Asia meet.
