SC affirms life sentence for 2 kidnappers

THE Supreme Court (SC) has sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for kidnapping in Tanauan, Batangas in 1999. In a decision penned by Associate Justice Teresita Leonardo de Castro and concurred in by Associate Justices Estela Perlas-Bernabe, Lucas Bersamin, and Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa, the SC’s First Division found accused-appellants Vicente Lugnasin and Devincio Guerrero guilty beyond reasonable doubt of the crime of kidnapping for ransom under Article 267 of the Revised Penal Code, as amended by Section 8 of Republic Act No. 7659. Records of the case showed that Lugnasin, Guerrero and several others took Nicassius Cordero to the municipality of Tanauan. Cordero was detained for the purpose of extorting ransom money for his safe release from detention. The demand for the payment of ransom money was made on the victim’s relatives. The victim was released in the evening of April 24, 1999 along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).
