THE Supreme Court (SC) affirmed the decision of the Court of Appeals (CA) that upheld the Office of the Ombudsman’s ruling dismissing from service five Quezon City government officials who were found liable for the deaths of many people in a hotel fire in 2001. In a decision, the SC’s Third Division affirmed the March 15, 2012 and June 18, 2012 resolutions of the appeals court directing the dismissal from the service and one-year suspension of electrical inspector Gerardo Villasenor and engineer Rodel Mesa, respectively. Records showed that a fire occurred at the Quezon City Manor Hotel killing 74 persons on August 18, 2001. It was revealed that the hotel operated without fire safety regulators had not conducted safety inspections and that it had no required permits.
