COTABATO CITY: South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Avance Fuentes aired strong opposition to the plan of the government to provide free condoms to high school students saying it does not make sense.
The move is in connection with the fight to control the proliferation of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and HIV/AIDS.
“No, no!,” Fuentes said, publicly announcing her displeasure over the free condoms to high school students.
“The government’s plan of providing secondary students with free condoms in fight against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS doesn’t make sense,” Fuentes said in stressing her strong opposition.
The governor said the plan will send wrong signal to the young minds of school children, adding that instead of condoms right education and information must be given to school children
She suggested that condoms instead may be provided for free in motel, lodging houses and inns to prevent the spread of STDs.
Similarly, the Diocese of Marbel, through its spokesperson Valmie Mariveles, strongly opposed the government’s plan saying that “Condoms will not prevent teenage pregnancy.”
