Expatriates in the Philippines are betting on defending champions Seattle Seahawks to win against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 49 on February 1 at the University of Phoenix Stadium.

Several bars in Makati City among them Team Insider Sports, Irish Sports Bar Mulligans and Howzat will have live screenings of the Super Bowl finals on the morning of February 2 (evening of February 1 in the US).

“I have a good feeling that Seahawks will repeat as a champ because defense is the best offense and defense wins championship,” Canadian Bradley McCalon, a patron of Howzat Bar told The Manila Times in an interview.

“Seattle will win by seven. I think defense will prove their point and as what I say it [defense]will be the good offense anytime,” he added. “Although I don’t follow Seattle that much, they have a strong and very reliable quarter and running backs like Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch.”

But McCalon cautioned that the New England Patriots could upset the Seattle Seahawks too.

“The Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady will be the key to the other side. They are quick and defensively strong, talented and big too. Upset can possibly happen anytime,” added McCalon. “I’m not a fan of both teams though because I’m a Green Bay Packers fan.”

“But the New England Patriots are a dynasty in American football with quarterback Brady. His performance is timeless. Seahawks are favored but Patriots are my team.”

New York City native Robert Hutton, who’s traveling back and forth between New York to Manila for 15 years, also said that the Seattle Seahawks would most likely retain their title.

“In big game like this, defense is more important than offense. But I think it will be Seattle, it will be a close game,” said Hutton, 50, a regular of the Team Insider Sports Bar. “I know Patriots have Brady but they are in controversy now. I’ll pick Seattle to win in close game.”

“Both quarterbacks are good. I’m a follower of American football since I was a child. Our team the New York Giants did not make it in the playoff. They have a bad record this year. New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks have a good record, on the other hand,” added Hutton.

Local National Football League fan Daniel “Danbee” Henares, husband of Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim Henares, said that his favorite team ever since is the New England Patriots because of 6’4 quarterback Tom Brady. Henares said though that Seahawks are likely to win this year’s Super Bowl. “Seahawks are a worthy defending champion, so we know they have the best players to win again,” said Henares.
