SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union: Local authorities are still searching for 56 missing fishermen after 14 were rescued on Sunday night.
Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director Melchito Castro said on Monday that search and rescue operation is still ongoing for the fishermen who were reported missing during the onslaught of Tropical Storm Kabayan on Friday.
Castro said the Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of Pangasinan joined the agency in the said operation.
He added that most of those missing fishermen were residents of the towns of Dasol, Infanta, Burgos and Agno in Western Pangasinan.
“We have already informed the families of the fishermen,” he said.
The missing persons were caught in the midst of the storm because some of them ignored the warning of both the OCD and the weather bureau.
It was earlier reported by the Philippine Navy that only 15 boats, carrying 54 fishermen were missing last Sunday but it turned that there were more.
Castro added that as of 12 noon on Monday, a Navy plane and Coast Guard ships were dispatched to continue the search operations.
Fourteen fishermen, most of them from Luna town in La Union, were rescued by the Coast Guard on Sunday night and were sent home.
