THE search is now on for this year’s outstanding teachers, who effectively teach students the value of savings and financial education, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said on Monday.

Called GURO ng PAG-ASA (Gantimpala para sa Ulirang Pagtuturo ng Pag-iimpok at Araling Pansalapi), the search will reward teachers who exhibited exemplary dedication in teaching the habit of savings using teaching guides in Edukasyon sa Pagpakatao (EsP), Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan  (EPP) and Araling Panlipunan (AP).

“While the search will officially start on October 2013 and culminate in January 2014, we want to drum up public awareness at this point so that many people will realize the importance of financial literacy,” Luistro said.

Based on DepEd Memo No. 117 series of 2013, the search is for public elementary school teachers handling any one of the learning areas in EsP, EPP and AP and have been using the teaching guides on financial education for at least one school year.

Also eligible for nomination are teachers of these subjects who garnered a performance rating of at least ‘very satisfactory’ during the search period. Principals and/or school heads or the district supervisor can nominate.

The criteria are composed of three parts. The first part is instructional competence and teaching effectiveness which has 75 points. The second part is professional and community involvement which is assigned 25 points. The third is ‘plus factor’ which should be focused on documentation of school-based sustainability program that promotes the value of saving, money management and entrepreneurship which earns additional 20 points.

There will be 12 national finalists: 3 from Luzon (1 teacher of EsP, 1 teacher of EPP, 1 teacher of AP), 3 from Visayas, 3 from Mindanao and 3 from the National Capital Region. The top three national winners will receive P100, 000 each in cash prize, a medal and a complete set of computer with printer. The schools of the national winners will each receive a projector with screen.

The rest of the national finalists will each receive P50, 000 and certificates of recognition. Their respective schools will be given a plaque of recognition for their support on propagating financial education in the school and in the community.

A special prize of P10, 000 will be awarded to a student or to class who initiated sustained savings program that promote financial education and entrepreneurial activities in school or at home.
