Security tightens after Mindanao explosions

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Police tightened security in Mindanao provinces following a series of attacks against politicians ahead of the May 9 elections.

Four people were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded on Wednesday in the village of Pandan in South Upi town, Maguindanao. The victims were followers of Vice Mayor Remegio Sioson who is running for mayor under the PDP-Laban.

Sioson was not hurt in the blast.

In neighboring North Cotabato province, a fragmentation grenade was lobbed in the house of Pikit town Mayor Muhyryn Sultan Casi. Casi is also running for vice mayor with his father – Sumulong – as mayor.

Both are running under the ruling Liberal Party.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the two attacks, but police suspected the incidence of violence was connected to politics. Al Jacinto
