Comedian Sef Cadayoda has officially been chosen as the new generation “Juan Tamad” as he takes on his first lead role in GMA News and Public Affairs production of the same title.
Announced just this week, the show is set to premiere this coming Sunday, August 23, and aims to bring viewers a good laugh with the misadventures of the classic Filipino character.
Though Juan still waits from fruits to fall from the tree, the series takes a fresh perspective in re-introducing the “lazy boy” in modern times—his antics to escape household duties, homework, and eventually, his job.
Ironically, Juan falls for Mariang Masipag, portrayed by Max Collins, who is a bright, diligent, and gorgeous lady. Because of love, Juan will surprisingly show how much he is willing just to win her heart.
Describing his role, Sef said, “Si Juan Tamad, term lang talaga ‘yung tamad eh, pero meron siyang malaking puso. ‘Yun ‘yung gusto niyang ipakita—family values, comedy, love interest, at saka helping the community.”
More than a laugh trip, Juan Tamad also aims to impart an important message to the viewers especially to the younger generation.
“I think our main goal is to inform people of what’s happening but to advice them to take it lightly. Siyempre ang lalaki naman talaga ng problema dito sa Pilipinas, pero ang kailangan natin is hindi maging negative and maging positive like Juan,” Sef explained. “Gusto rin naming ipakita sa mga bata ngayon na tamad man si Juan Tamad, hindi niya nakakalimutan na importante sa kanya ang education.
Juan Tamad, which airs on Sunday at 4:45 p.m. on GMA Network, is head-written by Carlos Palanca hall of famer Rody Vera and Rak of Aegis playwright Liza Magtotoo. It is directed by veteran comedian Soxie Topacio.
