Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and his wife, Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado, left for the Holy Land Saturday evening, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said on Sunday.
MIAA Public Affairs said the Revillas were flying with three of their children and close friends.
The senator is among the legislators facing a plunder charge in connection with the pork barrel scheme.
The family stayed at the Dignitaries’ Lounge prior to their flight to Israel via Dubai.
The Revillas were escorted by Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group personnel up to the airport’s boarding gate.
Reports said the justice department gave Revilla permission to travel which his trip to Israel had been planned a month earlier, taking advantage for the Holy Week recess.
In a television interview, Revilla dismissed speculations that he was fleeing with his family prior to the release of his warrant of arrest for his involvement in the PDAF scam.
He vowed that he will return to face the charge.
The news of his departure was triggered by text messages on Saturday that he was leaving Manila for Hong Kong.
Immigration officials allowed Revilla to leave the country because there is no hold departure order against him. BENJIE L. VERGARA
