Sen. Cynthia Villar on Thursday admitted having dinner with socialite Ruby Tuason and Sen. Jinggoy Estrada at Tuason’s mansion in Makati City last year, but said it was purely social.
Villar made the admission after Estrada revealed during the weekly Kapihan sa Senado news forum that he and another senator dined at Tuason’s residence in Dasmarinas Village before the 2013 mid-term elections.
Villar said she had known Tuason since the time when she was working as the social secretary of former President and now Manila City Mayor Joseph Estrada, and her husband, Manuel Villar was the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“I had dinner with Ms. Tuason and Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, but it was purely social,” Villar said in a statement she sent to reporters.
At the forum, Estrada never mentioned Villar’s name because he said there was nothing wrong with the dinner and that he doesn’t want to drag the neophyte senator into the pork barrel controversy.
Estrada however dropped some hints, saying that aside from being a first time senator, the other dinner guest belongs to the Senate majority bloc.
There are only four neophyte senators in the majority bloc and Senators Grace Poe and Paolo Benigno Aquino 4th have denied having dinner with Tuason. That left Villar and Sonny Angara.
Villar said Tuason “was trying to bring me closer to Senator Jinggoy since he is planning to run for a higher position.” JEFFERSON ANTIPORDA
